Ale

Berlines Weisse

Light body, refreshing, slightly fruity, sour, low influence of hop, (Bruery Hottenroth, dog fish head Festina Peche, 1809 Berlinerweisesse )

American Wheat

Usually clear in contrast to most other wheat beers, slightly tart, very refreshing, (Widmer Hefe, southern tier hop sun)

Dunkelweizen

Dark color, some clove & banana aroma, malty, low bitterness, loe hop aroma, (Ayinger ur-wisse, Weihenstephaner Hefe Dunkel)

Lambic/Guze

The most unusual sour-tasting beer w/ very little hop aroma, (Cantillion Irish) gueze; blends of young & old Lambic, (Girardin Gueuze, oud beersel oude gueuze)

Fruit Beer

Taste & aroma depend on fruits used. usually dry & winey. not all fruit beers are lambic based, (Drie Fonteinen Schaerbeekse Kriek, Oud beersel oud kriek)

Oud Bruin

Fruity, malty, sherry wine-like, slightly sour, very little hop aroma & flavor. (Abbaye Des Rocs Bune, Mionette Brune)

Saison

Fruity, complex aroma & flavor of high alcohol, herbs, & spices, moderate hop aroma & flavor, Dupont Avec les Bons Voeux, boulevard saison Brett)

Belgian Strong Pale

Well attenuaed light body beer that is often deceivingly high in alcohol, often brewed w/ "candy" sugar & low or medium hoppiness. (Duvel, urthel hop-it)

Tripel

Light/pale color, balanced malt & hop aroma, sweetish alcohol content. (Tripel Karmeliet, Westmalle Tripel, Chimay White)

Abt

Strongest style brewed by abbey monks who it's named after, very similar to quads (Rochefort 10, Bernardus 12)

American Pale Ale

Medium maltiness, high hop & aroma from American hop varieties, (Oskar blues Dale's pale ale, stone pale)

Imperial IPA

Also called double IPA's, these high alcohol beers are balance by intense hop character & full body, no aged characters, but instead should be fresh & bright. (dog fish head 90 minutes, stone ruination, great divide Hercules IPA)

English Pale

Golden to amber color & dominated by malt flavor, very little hop bitterness or aroma in this low alcohol ale. (Firestone walker DBA)

Olde Ale/Strong Ale

Well aged. Malty & fruity. High alcohol. low hop. (Arrogant bastard, Fuller's vintage, hair of the dog Adam)

Scottish Ale

Low carbonation. medium maltiness. low bitterness. medium to no hop flavor & aroma. mild smokey/toasty character (Bellhaven Scottish, Pelican MacPelican)

English Brown

Sweet & malty. light caramel flavor. low hop profile. some fruitness. (Newcastle brown, Samuel Smith nut brown)

Brown Porter

Moderate roastiness. Moderate bitterness. Hop flavor & aroma low to noene. (Elgood flag porter, Samuel Smith Taddy porter)

Dry Stout

Roasted barley & malt aromas are prominent. Some sourness. Hop aroma medium to none. (Moylans draggons, guinness draught)

Imperial Stout

Belgian Wit

Faro

Flanders Red Ale

Belgian Pale

Low hop bitterness & aroma, light or medium body. Low fruitiness. (Orval, de ranke xx bitter)

Biere De Garde

Ligh to medium body, medium hoppiness, alcohol flavor evident, often bottle condition & yeasty. (Ommegang biere de mars, pelican bridal)

Belgian Strong Dark

Dubbel

Quadruple

Immense presence of alcohol & balance flavors, complex fruity aroma, often worth a hint of winy character, low or medium hops & often full, creamy body, savoring/sipping drink ability. (La trapp quad, boulevard quad)

India Pale Ale

Medium maltiness, high hop bitterness, high hop flavor & aroma, (Alesmith IPA, bear republic racer 5)

Alt, Red & Amber Ale

Medium maltiness, mild to strong flavor & aroma from American hop varieties, notable caramel flavor. (Uerige Doppelsticke, green flash hop head red)

Bitters

Low carbonation. maltiness & bitterness increase from ordinary to extra special bitters, fullers ESB

Barley Wine

Fruity & malty. High hop aroma & flavor. High alcohol content. (Alesmith old numbskull, victory old horizontal)

Scotch Ale

Foreign Stout

Hybrid

Cram Ale

Crisp & refreshing beers characterized by great drinkability. Hop bitterness or aroma can be almost absent. A fruity or estey aroma absent. A fruity or estey aroma may be present. (Laughing dog cream ale, pelican kiwanda cream)

California Common

Originally called a steam beer, it is brewed w/ lager yeast, but at warmer temperature resultin in a medium body amber beer. Noticeable caramel flavor & medium hoppiness (anchor steam, baird red rose amber)

Kolsch

A warm fermented ale that is conditioned cold often w/ larger yeast for a crisp finish. Low caramel character as well as low hop flavor & aroma. (Sunner kolsch, reissdorf olsch)

Baltic Porter

Very dark medium to full bodied strong lager. very smooth & low in hops. (Alaskan baltic porter, victory baltic porter)

Lager

American Lite

Little to no malt aroma. Very low in hops. Crisp & dry refreshing. (Michelob ultra, bud lite)

American Dark

Malty. Some roasted malt flavor. Low hops. (Bear republic oso negro, bayern Killarney)

Bohemian Pilsner

Malty, w/ a distinctive floral & spicy saaz hop bouquet. crisp & refreshing. (Pilsner Urquell, heater Allen pils, Lagunitas pils)

Schwarz-Bier

Malt & roasted malt aroma & flavor. Low hop aroma. Bitterness from roasted mal. (Monchschof schwartzbier)

Helles Bock

Malty. Mildly hopped. Relatively high alcohol level. Amber in color. (Rogue dead guy, sierra nevada helles bock)

Doppel Bock

Intense maltiness. Little hop aroma & flavor. Touch of roastiness. A very strong, rich, dark lager. (Ayinger celebrator, weltenburger kloster asam bock)

American Lager

Similar to American light but darker. (Old German, pabst blue ribbon)

Helles Lager

Mildly hopped & mildy malty. Fuller body than most lagers. (Lowenbrau, spaten lager, ayinger jahrhundert-bier, weltenburger helles barock, pinkus pils)

Dunkel

Munich malt aroma & flavor. Mild hop flavor. (Ayinger altbairisch dunkel, reutberger dunkel)

Vienna, Marzen, Oktoberfest

Medium bodied beers that range widely in color, but dominated by malty aroma & sweetness. More bread or biscuit-like than caramel in character & low but noticeable hops. (Ayinger oktoberfest-marzen, lakefront riverwest, stein)

Bock

Rich & complex maltiness. No hop aroma & flavor. (Aktein st. martin, christoffel bock)

Eisbock

Aroma & flavor dominated by rich malt & concentrated alcohol. No hop aroma & flavor. An extremely strong lager. (Klumbacher eisbock, eku 28)
