Many residents of Gravesend from the Rev. War era are buried in Gravesend Cemetery including Col Rutgert Van Brunt (1722-1812), command of the Kings County Regiment and Capt Rem Williamson (1739-1825)
The Stars and Stripes first flew over the Village of New Utrecht in November 1783 from a Liberty Pole erected at the head of New Utrecht's main st (84th st) to celebrate the withdrawal of the British.
In August of 1776, the American Revolution erupted in Brooklyn. The first, and largest, conflict of the War, the Battle of Brooklyn included sites now occupied by The Old Stone House and Prospect Park
The New Utrecht Milestone (erected 1741) marked the juncture of Kings Hway (now 82nd St) and Old Road (now 18th ave), which led to the Town of Flatbush and to Gowanus Bay.
